WHEELING — Residents interested in Wheeling history will have a chance to learn about it next fall, just like Wheeling Park High School students.
Ohio County Schools received a $1,000 partnership grant from Wheeling Heritage to provide a copy of the Wheeling history lesson taught by Ryan Stanton to the public.
Stanton will teach classes in the evenings, with classes scheduled to meet twice a month, said Karin Butin, director of public relations and alumni relations for Ohio County Schools.
Dates for the sessions have yet to be determined, but they are expected to begin in the fall.
The $1,000 grant will help cover the purchase of a copy of “Wheeling: Then and Now,” a book by Sean Duffy, programming coordinator for Ohio County Libraries and executive director of the Wheeling Academy of Forensic Sciences.
Butin said the class is free of charge.
“We will provide books and the class will be open to area adults who are interested in learning about Wheeling’s history,” she said.
Mr. Stanton is a former Ohio County Teacher of the Year.
“He’s very enthusiastic when he teaches, which is why students flock to his classes,” Butin said. “When I found out the grant money was available, I knew there would be a lot of adults who would want to take this course. This would be another opportunity to deepen the connection between our city and the school and let residents know what we have to offer.”
The class is one of the school’s most popular electives, she added.
“It’s great, every city has a story and their own culture that makes them special and we want to reflect that,” she said.
