RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — The Virginia Black History Museum and Cultural Center has announced its June lineup of exhibitions and programs.
Throughout the month of June, experience a month of cultural heritage, music and history at Virginia’s Black History Museum and Cultural Center.

Virginia is a State for Music Lovers: A History of Black Musical Excellence in Virginia
June 1-July 27 The exhibit will tour Virginia’s rich Black musical traditions, showcasing talented local artists, musicians, DJs and historians. The museum says the exhibit will feature QR codes that unlock a narrative playlist that complements the visual art on display.
Return to the Rock: From Serfdom to Empowerment
June 15-Aug. 17 The exhibit explores the history of St. Francis de Sales and St. Emma Military Academy, which the museum says was the nation’s only black military academy for more than 70 years.

Artist Talk: “Re(clay)ing Collaborative Intersections” by Lydia C. Thompson
On Saturday, June 8th from 2-4pm, Lydia C. Thompson will talk about the history of African American ceramics and the inspiration for the exhibition, including “As dust accumulates in layers, so do stories accumulate in layers.” Click here to register for the event.
Preserving Virginia’s Jazz Tradition at VCU’s Institute of Contemporary Arts
On Saturday, June 15, from 3 to 5 p.m., the Jazz Society’s BJ Brown will speak about Virginia’s role in the development of jazz and highlight the accomplishments of 38 Virginia artists who have been recognized nationally and internationally.
