BBC viewers are loving new crime drama “The Turkish Detective,” which has become a word-of-mouth hit since it began airing earlier this month.
The series is based on Barbara Nadel’s novel ‘Inspector Çetin Ikmen’ and stars Haluk Bilginer as Inspector Çetin Ikmen, who investigates crimes across Istanbul with the help of a team of highly skilled detectives.
Watch: Are you enjoying the show?
Viewers couldn’t help but notice the large number of cats featured in the series, which highlights the huge number of stray cats that roam freely on the streets of Istanbul.
Stray cats have become an important part of the city’s culture, cared for by the whole community, and there is even a documentary about them, the 2017 film Kedi (which means “cat” in Turkish), directed by Ceyda Torun.
Taking to social media, one person wrote: “Having fun spotting the cats in Turkish Detective, there’s one in every scene, kind of like the cat in Where’s Wally,” while another added: “Maybe we shouldn’t enjoy the cats in Turkish Detective so much.”
A third viewer said: “Even the police station is full of cats in ‘Turkish Detective’,” while another commented: “Stray cats are part of Turkish culture, that’s why they appeared in the ‘Turkish Detective’ drama series.”
Since the first episode premiered in July, fans have been praising the charming show and clamoring for a return.
One person wrote: “Enjoyed #TheTurkishDetective. Heartwarming and entertaining TV. Please @BBCOne for more!”
A second fan commented: “Dear @paramountpicsph and @Miramax, please do a second series of #TheTurkishDetective. It was absolutely amazing. @BarbaraNadel’s book came to life and the whole cast was amazing especially @halukbilginer_. It was funny, moving and had me in tears at the end.”
The Ben Schiffer-written series was acquired by the BBC from Paramount Global Content Distribution, and the BBC has yet to comment on the show’s future.
For those who haven’t seen the series yet, it is set in Istanbul and follows three detectives as they tackle an investigation rooted in the city’s rich culture.
Here’s the full synopsis: “Set in the multifaceted city of Istanbul, ‘Turkish Detective’ follows the adventures of Inspector Çetin Ikmen (Bilginer) and his partners Detective Mehmet Suleyman (Ehsan Kay) and Detective Ayse Farsakoğlu (Yasemin Kay Aren) as they experience highs and lows while solving crimes. Each crime story is deeply rooted in Istanbul’s diverse culture and history, set against the backdrop of the frenetic world of modern-day Turkey.”
The Turkish Detective is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
