RIO GRANDE VALLEY, Texas (ValleyCentral) — Valley Baptist Health System and the Food Bank of the Rio Grande Valley are partnering to provide healthy breakfasts to children and adults experiencing hunger through the Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive.
The donations will be donated to the Rio Grande Valley Food Bank, according to a VBHS news release.
“We know the importance of starting your day with a nutritious breakfast and through this initiative we hope to help the many area residents who suffer from food insecurity,” said Michael Klein, president and CEO of Valley Baptist Health System Market at Valley Baptist Harlingen.
In the Rio Grande Valley, nearly one in two children live below the federal poverty level. Summer is an especially tough time for families as children are out of school. Local school districts have been working hard to establish programs to provide healthy meals to children who are out of school, but donations are still greatly needed.
“Valley Baptist Brownsville has been cultivating the health of our community for more than 100 years, and initiatives like the Healthy Over Hungry Cereal Drive play a vital role in our mission by making a positive, tangible impact in the lives of our friends, neighbors and loved ones in need,” said Leslie Bingham, CEO of Valley Baptist Medical Center Brownsville.
For the 2023 Healthy Over Hungry cereal drive, the community partnered with VBHS to donate more than $2,600 and 47,000 meals of cereal to help families in need throughout the RGV.
The campaign begins on Monday, June 3rd and runs until Monday, June 14th.
At Valley Baptist Brownsville, donations can be dropped off at the information desk in the Stillman Lobby.
At Valley Baptist Harlingen, donations can be dropped off in the hospital’s south tower lobby.
