Not only was Tuesday a great day for Bay Area baseball fans, it was also a historic game for Golden State.
The Athletics and Giants’ wins allowed the Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres to join other California teams in the win column with wins each.
Oakland beat the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0 to win the first of a three-game series, while San Francisco recorded a thrilling 1-0 walk-off win over the Philadelphia Phillies to record its fourth straight win.
Meanwhile, the Angels beat the New York Yankees 4-3 at home, the Dodgers smashed the New York Mets in a doubleheader and the Padres shut out the Miami Marlins 4-0 in San Diego.
This is the first time in MLB history that a state has had four or more shutout games on the same day and posted a record of 6-0 or better.
That wasn’t the only history involving the Giants on Tuesday.
Luis Matos’ walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th was the first time San Francisco had won the game 1-0 on a sacrifice fly since May 26, 1996. Coincidentally, that was also against the Phillies.
The Giants (29-27) have won 10 of their last 12 games, while the Athletics (23-33) have shocked the baseball world in more ways than one this season, even if their record doesn’t necessarily speak for itself.
Both teams hope to represent the Bay Area and California well as the 2024 season continues.
