LEXINGTON, Ky. (LEX 18) — From bourbon bottles to giant glam bottles, TSA saw it all at the airport during Kentucky Derby week.
“The number one culprit during Derby Week is the bourbon bottles that people like to carry around as souvenirs,” TSA spokesman Mark Howell said.
You are allowed to return with these, but they must be packed in your checked baggage at the bottom of the plane.
“We have a 3-1-1 rule, which is 3.4 ounces of liquid in a quart-sized bag,” Howell explained. That’s why you can’t take these bottles on board, even if they’re sealed.
Large fascinators must always be packed with checked baggage. If they are too large to comfortably pass through security, you may be asked to check them, which may result in additional manual inspections, a process that is already expected to take even more time this week. Additional time is added to the process.
“Get to the airport two hours before your flight,” Howell said about this week. “All the airports in the state. Cincinnati, Louisville, Lexington all have high volumes,” Howell said.
People still make the same mistake when it comes to bringing guns, knives, and other sharp objects on board. Just this morning, TSA officials announced that two guns were detected at the Blue Grass Airport.
“The excuse we get almost every time is, ‘Oh, I forgot I had it in my bag,'” Howell says.
To that end, he suggests emptying it completely before packing. Howell also said TSA never confiscates items. Travelers are always given the option to waive it or make other arrangements before passing through security.
