1962 – Merle Lindstrom wins the U.S. Women’s Open by defeating Jo Ann Prentiss and Ruth Jessen by two strokes.
1965 – The NFL awards the Atlanta franchise to Rankin Smith Sr., a vice president of the Georgia Life Insurance Company, who purchased the rights for $8.5 million, the largest amount in league history at the time.
1975 – Muhammad Ali retained his world heavyweight boxing title by defeating Britain’s Joe Bugner by unanimous decision in a rematch in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
1978 – Willie McCovey becomes the 12th player in major league history to hit 500 home runs.
1991 – Wimbledon breaks with 114-year tradition and plays matches on the middle Sunday of the tournament after rain earlier in the week caused a large backlog of play.
1991 – Meg Mallon sinks a 10-foot birdie putt on the final hole to break a tie with Pat Bradley and Ayako Okamoto and win the LPGA Championship.
1993 — NBA Draft: University of Michigan center Chris Webber is selected first overall by the Orlando Magic (traded to Golden State).
1994 – On June 25, Diego Maradona was banned from the World Cup by FIFA after failing a drugs test during Argentina’s match against Nigeria in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
1995 – Eddie Murray of the Cleveland Indians singled in the sixth inning against the Minnesota Twins, becoming the second switch hitter and the 20th player in baseball history to reach 3,000 career hits. Murray tied Pete Rose for the most career hits with 4,256 hits.
1996 — UEFA European Championship Final, Wembley Stadium, London, England: Oliver Bierhoff scores a second goal in extra time to help Germany beat the Czech Republic 2–1.
1999 — NBA Draft: Duke power forward Elton Brand is selected first overall by the Chicago Bulls.
2002 – Ronaldo scores two goals as Brazil beat Germany 2-0 to win their record fifth World Cup.
2012 – Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova becomes the first player to win every point in a set at a Grand Slam tournament, defeating French Open runner-up Sara Errani 6-0, 6-4 in the third round of Wimbledon.
2013 – Park Inbee wins the U.S. Women’s Open, marking her third consecutive major championship this year. Babe Zaharias is the last player to win three consecutive majors, but that was in 1950, the only year a player had ever won three consecutive majors.
2013 — NHL Draft: Halifax Mooseheads (QMJHL) centre Nathan MacKinnon is selected first overall by the Colorado Avalanche.
2015 — The United States defeats Germany 2-0 in the Women’s World Cup semifinals. Carli Lloyd scores a penalty kick to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. Substitute Kellie O’Hara scores off Lloyd’s cross in the 84th minute to give the U.S. a 2-0 victory.
2016 – Coastal Carolina University scores four runs on two errors on the same play in the sixth inning to defeat Arizona, 4-3, in Game 3 of the College World Series Finals to win their first national championship in any sport. The Chanticleers are the first team to win their first CWS appearance since the University of Minnesota in 1956.
2018 — FIFA World Cup: Kylian Mbappé (19) becomes just the second teenager in history (Pelé was the first in 1958) to score two goals in a World Cup match, as France beat Argentina 4–3 in Kazan.
2020 – FC Barcelona’s Argentine footballer Lionel Messi scores his 700th career goal in a 2-2 draw against Atlético Madrid.
2021 — Washington Nationals shortstop Trea Turner hits for the cycle for the third time, tying a major league record, in a 15-6 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.
