Our reasons for traveling are as diverse and varied as the places we visit. And in Mexico’s Riviera Nayarit, on the central Pacific coast, luxury new hotels like the Rosewood and St. Regis are adding a lavish sheen to laid-back surf beaches.

Similarly, there’s novelty in the revival of old favorites: Tucson has long been a magnet for foodies and backcountry adventurers, but its culturally rich Barrio Viejo neighborhood is set to be designated a National Historic Landmark in 2024, centered around the soon-to-be restored Teatro Carmen and a wave of new restaurants and cafes. And in Mobile, Alabama, a new Amtrak line will connect the port city with sister city New Orleans, just as a year-long spotlight is on African-American history and a new civil rights and heritage district.

But perhaps none is more promising than the opportunity to forge a connection with an uncharted territory like Nunavik, Quebec’s northernmost region, where over the next 12 months, Inuit-led adventures on the uninhabited Gyrfalcon Islands in Ungava Bay will provide rare access to a treasure trove of wildlife.
