Aydin Hasan – The separatist terrorist organization PKK has taken steps to prepare for illegal elections in northern Syria in order to carry out its plans to first gain autonomy and then establish an independent state.
The terrorist group attempted to set up illegal polling stations in northern Syria, where a civil war has been ongoing since 2011. The terrorist group’s call for local elections contrasts with its understanding of Syria’s territorial integrity.
Not complying with UN decisions
The elections are not in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254. The decision, adopted in 2015 by the Security Council, whose permanent members are the US, the UK, France, Russia and China, emphasizes: – Syria’s territorial integrity; – calling for an immediate ceasefire and a political solution in Syria; – emphasizing that the Syrian people will decide the future of Syria.

The emphasis is on Syrian-led political change with UN support. The decision underscores the commitment to Syria’s independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity. All UN statements in line with Security Council Resolution 2254 state that a political solution to the Syrian crisis requires the participation of all Syrian parties and the protection of Syria’s territorial integrity.
Autonomous Step
The PYD/YPG, the Syrian branch of the terrorist organization PKK, has carried out actions in stark violation of Security Council Resolution 2254. Local elections have begun east of the Euphrates. The first fixed date was announced as May 30, 2024. However, the election date was postponed to June 11. The elections will take place in the Sheba region of Jazira, Deir ez-Zor, Raqqa, Tabqa, Euphrates, Manbij and Afrin.
Thus, through its expansion, the PKK aims first to establish an “autonomous status in Syria” and then to implement its plan of “establishing an independent state.”
The election may be postponed again
Turkiye is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the diplomatic, military and intelligence sectors, and elections postponed to June 11 are likely to be postponed again.
The EU is taking notice
The election campaign in northern Syria is also being monitored by the EU. “We are closely monitoring developments,” an EU official said. “The decision to hold elections has not yet been endorsed by all parties in the country,” he said.

Boycott statement from ENKS supported by BARZANI
The Syrian Kurdistan National Council (ENKS) is an organization established by 11 opposition Kurdish parties and groups in Syria that oppose the regime. The council is headquartered in Erbil, in the Kurdistan Regional Government in northern Iraq. The council operates under the military and political backing of Massoud Barzani. The council also has military power.
The Syrian Kurdistan National Council announced that it would boycott the municipal elections. Muhammed Ismail, Secretary General of the Democratic Party of Syrian Kurdistan (PDK-S), an ENKS affiliate, said: “These are one-party elections. We are not participating in these elections and, in our opinion, these elections are not legitimate. Political parties use the military to hold their own elections. These elections have nothing to do with the situation in our country. And it harms our country. “The issue of our country is not the elections of political parties,” he said. Moreover, other political organizations in the region also support the decision to boycott the elections.
The list of candidates will be announced
The elections will take place in the region of northern and eastern Syria that the terrorist group calls Rojava. The region was declared an autonomous government, but Syria did not accept it. The terrorist group is not recognized by any country, so the region plans to take a step towards recognition through elections. The list of candidates for the municipal elections scheduled for June 11 is expected to be finalized today. The so-called Supreme Electoral Commission announced that it will publish on May 25 the final list of coalitions, parties and independent candidates who will take part in the local elections. Voting is scheduled in the region’s six largest cities, 40 cities and 105 towns. It is said that 3 million people will vote in the elections.
