The Syracuse City School District launched its summer meal program at Barnett Park on Monday.
The district is one of many in Central New York that offers free breakfast and lunch to students.
The program will be held Monday through Friday throughout the summer at various locations throughout Syracuse.
Demand for healthy, affordable meals is growing across Central New York.
According to recent data released by Feeding America, in just one year, food insecurity among children in the 11 counties served by the CNY Food Bank increased from 1 in 8 to 1 in 6.
In addition to the free meals, fresh produce provided by the CNY Food Bank will be distributed at one of the locations each day for students to take home to their families.
“Families will be able to take home fresh fruits and vegetables to feed not only their children but themselves as well,” said Karen Belcher, executive director of CNY Food Bank.
High food prices affect everyone, including food banks.
Belcher said inflation has caused the prices of some items to rise by 10 to 20 percent.
They want to help ease the same burden that so many families face.
“Families can go to these facilities with their children and provide meals for their children, which helps offset some of the costs over the summer.”
Belcher said despite the increased costs, they’re able to provide the food their neighbors need, thanks in part to community partners, which she and other leaders say is crucial.
“If children are hungry, they won’t be able to enjoy playing with their friends over the summer and their learning will be hindered at school,” said Mayor Ben Walsh.
“As a city, we care about feeding our kids and we care about their futures, and this is how we come together to make sure no child goes hungry,” said Rachel Viens, director of food and nutrition services for the Syracuse City School District.
This year, children will be given the choice of a takeaway meal or a meal to enjoy on-site.
Meals will be available at 38 locations across the city Monday through Friday from now through Aug. 16. Click here for a complete schedule listing the dates, times and locations where you can pick up your free meals.
