Today on WYFF News 4. With less than a month until the Paris Olympics, U.S. athletes are still vying for spots and the Black Pride Festival has gone from celebration to protest. How did we get to this? Good morning, Peyton Furtado here. Thanks for joining us on Sunday morning. I’m here to tell you about the weather we can expect today. This is live right now from the Sky Cam at the Hilton Greenville. Amazing skyline, 77 degrees. It’s going to be a great day. But these temperatures won’t last. We have Sydney Sullivan in studio with us to tell us a little more about that. Sydney, how should I dress? What should I expect? Yeah, if I’m going to have my first cup of coffee, I love a hot cup of coffee. But maybe an iced coffee would be nice this morning because the temperatures are already through the roof.Temperatures are 77 degrees in Greenville, as well as Anderson and Spartanburg, 73 degrees in Asheville, and 72 degrees in Franklin. Our friends in Abbeville are at 76 degrees, as is Union. It’s already a very mild start. And that doesn’t even factor in the humidity. It’s very muggy outside and will continue to be like this today. The good news is that it won’t last long. It should ease up a little bit. And there may be some scattered rain when it does. But for the time being, we’ll have nice, dry weather. We’ve got a series of rains and storms with a pretty strong cold front in the Northwest. This cold front will carry through later today and will bring relatively cool and dry weather into next week. But the rain that falls this afternoon will be very beneficial. We need it.We’ve been experiencing very hot and dry weather lately, and while many areas are expected to remain very dry, the rain showers and storms yesterday were relatively sporadic for most areas, but they were definitely a welcome change in the afternoon and evening. There will be more scattered showers and storms. With that comes hot outdoor temperatures near 100 degrees and more humidity, which will encourage more showers and storms. So let’s take a closer look at the latest storms and what the temperatures will be like going forward. Thank you, Peyton. Breaking news that there was a fire in Sidney, Lawrence County, that killed one person. The National Guard says it happened just after 5:30 p.m. yesterday near mile marker 13 on Interstate 385. A car and SUV were traveling south when the car struck the SUV. The National Guard says the SUV ran off the right side of the road and struck a guardrail. The driver of the SUV died at the scene and all three occupants of the vehicle were transported to the hospital with injuries. Their conditions are unknown at this time. The coroner has not yet released the name of the person who died, but we are investigating this matter further. The Easley Police Department is also asking for help in finding the suspects involved in the mailbox tampering. Police say several passengers in this Nissan Altima were tampering with mailboxes in the city on streets such as Patio Drive and Pearl Drive. If you have any information, please contact Easley Police. And now onto the Olympics. The men’s gymnastics team is headed to Paris, but Noah Lyles will officially have to do double duty after his recent win. Mark Burger has the details and reactions from Saturday’s Olympic Trials. Townville Kenny said “catch me if you can,” and the champion out of 100 at the Olympic Trials answered the challenge. He’s going to Paris. He ran the fastest time in the world this year, overtaking Kenny Bednarek and setting himself up for multiple medals in Paris. America is America. We don’t take anything away from us. Likewise, we don’t give anything away from us. Joining Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek on the way to Paris is Ariane Knighton, who placed third in the women’s final. Gabby Thomas is leading the way. She won the bronze medal in Tokyo. Gabby Thomas narrowly beat Brittany Brown in the 200m and has a shot at gold in Paris. This is incredible. I knew I had to do it today and this is the first step. If I don’t make the team today, I won’t get gold in Paris. So, I’m just ecstatic. Mackenzie Long placed third, but 100m champion Shakari Richardson placed fourth. That means she won’t be able to compete in the 200m at the Paris Men’s Gymnastics Trials. Some say he’s a little cocky. He’s not cocky. If you can prove it, Frederick, Richard has proven it. Win the all-around competition and take the top spot on the men’s gymnastics team. We’re going for the gold medal. I don’t know which one. Bronze, silver, gold. Which one? It’ll be one of them, but I know there’s one. And we’re going to do whatever it takes to get there. 2021 Olympian Brody Malone also joins the team after undergoing knee surgery just 16 months ago. Meanwhile, Paul Judah, one of three athletes making his Olympic debut along with Asher Hong and Steven Petrachek, will be looking for the first team medal in men’s gymnastics since 2008. Mark Berger, NBC News. Going back to the local news, a non-profit organization held a free swimming lesson in Malden yesterday. Aqua Angels hosted a free water safety clinic designed as an introductory swimming lesson for all ages. It also included lectures and CPR training, and everyone was given a swim cap, goggles, and more to set themselves up for success. The majority of our participants are from historically marginalized communities who may not have had or may never have access to the resources we offer. So we try to be a light in the community to let people know that we are here and we are here to help them. If you want to take swimming lessons, Aqua Angels offers sessions throughout the year. And in downtown Greenville, a show of pride turned to hostility. Yesterday, the Black Pride March and Festival was meant to celebrate the Black LGBTQ community. It was met with protesters and clashes. It was supposed to be an event for community-wide celebration and fellowship, we were told. We have been told that there are over 100 vendors scheduled to perform on this day. Food, drinks, merch. But here is what happened. We outnumber you guys and it is really, honestly more fun for us to come and make fun of you. They may think we hate them, but we don’t. But we hate the sin that is destroying their lives. And that was in the early hours of yesterday afternoon. The official Upstate Black Pride after party took place last night at the Judson Mills Social Innovation Center, and the City of Simpsonville is hosting their annual free Fourth of July concert tonight. The Simply Freedom Festival begins tonight at 6:00 at the CNB Amphitheater. Parking opens at 4:00. Gates open at 5:30. I would arrive early, as the gates close when the venue is full. Food and drinks will be available at the venue. The event will be headlined by Grammy-nominated band Smash Mouth, and the evening will end with a fireworks show. And this morning we continue our 4 Ways We Win series. For the record, we bring you a parenting discussion. Our own Nigel Robertson speaks with leaders from United Way, First Steps of Greenville County, and the Child Success Institute. The executive director of Greenville County First Steps says his organization offers programs for families from newborn to K4. If we can reduce the number of children who use the emergency room as their primary medical outlet, we free up emergency room beds. When they need them, right? If families make sure they read to their children at toddler age, by the time they’re 4K, they’re exposed to books and learning to read and speak. That way, when they go to kindergarten, the learning curve is not as steep for 4-year-olds. That makes it easier for everyone. You can listen to the full Greenville County Parenting conversation this morning at 11:30. Watch it now on WIFE FOUR. It’s still going. Don’t leave food in the car. A bear broke into a family’s minivan at a campground in California. It’s all on video. That story continues next. Okay, so it’s a great start, but it’s already so hot and muggy. Next, we’ll tell you what the temperature will be like from here and when the next season will be.
