SunSeed’s Vita Prima Hedgehog Food is being recalled due to possible Salmonella contamination. VitaCraft Vita Smart Hedgehog Food is also part of this recall. It doesn’t say if there have been any reports of illness, but the recall notice states, “The testing that found the bacteria was part of random testing conducted by the state of Minnesota on consumer products and was not initiated by any consumer concern.” The company issuing the recall is VitaCraft Sun Seed, Inc. of Weston, Ohio.
Pets can get sick from eating these foods, and humans can get sick from handling food or coming into contact with sick animals or objects. Animals infected with Salmonella may show symptoms such as loss of appetite, fever, and abdominal pain. Some animals may appear perfectly healthy but still carry the bacteria.
Human symptoms of Salmonella infection include fever, headache, chills, nausea, abdominal cramps, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea that may include blood in the stool.
The recalled products include Sun Seed Vita Prima Hedgehog Food and Vitakraft Vita Smart Hedgehog Food. Package sizes, UPC numbers, lot numbers, and expiration dates for these products can be found on the FDA website. Photos of the recalled products are not included in the recall notice.
The recalled lots were delivered to Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. Retailers and distributors who received the recalled lots have been contacted and asked to remove these lots from their inventory and shelves.
If you have purchased this product, do not feed it to your pets, dispose of it in a secure trash can where animals cannot access it, or return it to the store where you purchased it for a full refund.
