I worry that I’ll remain a NARP whose only knowledge of sports is that Taylor Swift dates a football player. Realistically, most of my news about the Paris Olympics will come from Alex Cooper’s Olympics show for girls, who are just girls and know nothing about sports. That being said, the name Sunitha “Suni” Lee is very familiar to even me. The spectacular gymnast is the 2020 Olympic all-around champion and a six-time member of the U.S. Women’s National Gymnastics Team, with six World Championship and Olympic medals to her name. No big deal.
With all that winning, how on earth does he have time to date someone? It’s a bit of a mystery. But Suni has been in serious relationships publicly. Suni had previously publicly dated fellow athlete Jaylin Smith, a cornerback (isn’t that the word quarterback? How many backs are there?) for the University of Southern California football team, the Trojans. He and Suni went public with their relationship on December 26, 2021, when they posted a cute photo of them embracing and laughing on Instagram.
Sunisa, who is Hmong American (Hmong are an indigenous people of East and Southeast Asia), received criticism from some members of her community for dating someone outside her race. In a December 30, 2021 post, TikTok user @alixvangphom supported Sunisa’s relationship announcement, acknowledging in the caption, “I know Sunisa’s boyfriend will be looked at a certain way in the Hmong community because he’s black. Love is love, regardless of race or gender.” She further emphasized, “Just be yourself, queen.” We love a supportive king.
The gymnast expressed her gratitude in the comments section. “I’m so happy,” she wrote. “I’ve been through so much harassment 😭 They support me when it’s beneficial but never when it comes to my happiness. Thank you! 💗”

After my thorough social media sleuthing, I found that Suni and Jaylin no longer follow each other on Instagram, and her relationship announcement post is no longer on the grid. It was young love, and she’s one of the busiest women in the world, so it’s no surprise that the two appear to be going their separate ways.
There’s still no evidence of a new special someone coming into Suni’s life… We think she’s currently focused on competing for the US National Team at the Paris Olympics. Of course, we’re rooting for this icon!
