Enjoy the sunshine and the sound at Australian Airlines. This summer travel season, we want you to sweat it out on the beach instead of in the terminal. That’s why we’ve installed big fans in the terminal. And thanks to new direct flights and a new air conditioning system, it’s getting cooler here.
Well, if you’re in a rush to catch your flight… no sweat can help. But we can provide you with some handy travel tips to avoid racing to the gate. Last summer, we set a record with 2,040,981 passengers in one month. We recommend arriving early as terminals can get busy. It’s better to have extra time than to miss your flight.
This is a marathon, not a sprint, so arrive early.
Get through security with ease – pack appropriately!
Starting May 8, the following updates will be made to TSA checkpoints: Checkpoint 3 will close as of February 2024 and will remain closed while construction of the West Infill project is ongoing, with an expected completion date of 2026. Travelers can track construction activity by visiting the Journey With AUS Construction page.
Screening of passengers through TSA Pre-Check and Clear will be available at Checkpoint 2 West.
Travelers without PreCheck or Clear must use Checkpoint 1 or 2 East for general screening.
Global Entry kiosks are also available.
For more information regarding security, please see our travel tips page or refer to the image below.
If you’re not sure whether you’ll be allowed to bring carry-on or checked luggage, TSA.gov is a great resource that provides instructions on how to pack properly. To see if an item is allowed at the airport, use the TSA’s searchable “What can I bring?” list.
Firearms are prohibited at TSA security checkpoints. Double-check your baggage before you head to the airport to avoid accidentally bringing a firearm through TSA. For more information about traveling with a firearm, please visit our What to Know Before You Go – Traveling with a Firearm page.
Even permitted items may be subject to additional screening. If an item raises an alarm during screening, the final decision on whether it will be allowed on board rests with the TSA. For more packing tips, check out our how to pack video.
Know your game plan – Park or drop off passengers
Looking to park in AUS? Visit ABIAParking.com to see real-time availability for your parking options. Starting May 19, the option to reserve a parking space in the Red Garage, Blue Garage and Economy Parking will be temporarily unavailable until August 10, 2024. This will ensure that all garage parking is available to all customers during the peak summer travel period.
Shuttle service to the terminal runs every 15-20 minutes, so we recommend that you allow plenty of time for your arrival if you plan to use it.
You can drop off passengers either on the upper departure or lower arrival floors. If you are picking someone up and the lower arrival floor is very busy, you can ask to pick up the passenger on the upper floor.
Frontier and Allegiant Airlines passengers are encouraged to park on site at the South Terminal.
Looking to rent a car? Leave the Barbara Jordan Terminal, cross one of the signed crosswalks and follow the hollow concrete floating walkway to the car rental facility. You can also use a digital map of Australia to find a car rental facility, or check out this digital document for detailed instructions.
Vacation starts in AUS…
Once you’ve made it through security, celebrate with food from local restaurants while listening to the soothing sounds of live music reverberating throughout the terminal. If you prefer shopping or art therapy, there are plenty of options to choose from, with step-by-step directions provided by the AUS digital wayfinding map at airportmaps.flyaustin.com.
Averaging around 30 shows per week, AUS is excited to present great music from some of Austin’s most talented artists. A detailed schedule of the eight music stages can be found on AUS’ Live Music in the Air program webpage.
Of course, AUS will have additional Aviation Bureau staff on hand during busy periods to help with line management, TSA support, passenger guidance and more at the terminal. We want to give you a comfortable and safe experience at the airport. Please remember to be patient, kind and considerate to those around you and to AUS employees. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask an airport employee.
