HENDERSON, La. (KLFY) — Groups gathered at Henry Guidry Memorial Park in Henderson to help Second Harvest Food Bank distribute 24 pallets of food and essentials to families in St. Martin Parish affected by the recent storms.
“We got a call from (Henderson Police) Officer Thibodaux, and he asked if we could answer this call for help, and Second Harvest said, of course we can,” said Lemelle Jones, impact coordinator for Second Harvest.
Smile Community Action and Love Acadiana also came along to help with distribution to the many families who gathered.
Families lined up for hours to get food after recent severe weather left some with no power and destroyed their homes.
“We’ve been strategically putting things in place for the community over the last few weeks — again, not just Henderson, but all of St. Martin Parish,” Thibodeau said.
The donated items were mainly vegetables, fruit, meat and other items that residents had lost, and Jones said the organization was ready to provide assistance to more than 500 vehicles.
“We’re happy to be a part of any disaster response and helping rebuild communities,” she said.

Some family members say they are grateful that the community is helping them out during this time and hope the situation will change soon.
St. Martin Parish resident Marcia Myers said her community has “a lot of support and we’ll bounce back, hopefully it won’t be too long.”
