BEMIDJI — The Beltrami County History Center will host its monthly Brown Bag History program at noon Thursday, June 20, at the Beltrami County Historical Society, 130 Minnesota Ave. SW.
June’s Brown Bag History presenters will be well-known square dancer Carole Laitala and First City Squares caller Roger Lueth. The two will talk about the history of square dancing clubs in the area, including the founding of First City Squares in 2002, special events around the state and country, and the social, health and fun aspects of square dancing.
“Square dancing is a vibrant group dance with a history that spans continents and centuries,” the press release states. “Adopted from European folk dances, particularly those of England and France, square dancing made its way to America with the early settlers. In the 19th century, it became an established social gathering in frontier communities and evolved into a uniquely American tradition.”
“The caller tradition, a key element of modern square dancing, helps dancers execute a complex series of movements. This practice, and 20th century standardization efforts, particularly by figures like Lloyd Shaw, have helped keep square dancing vibrant and accessible,” the press release added.
Raitala and Ruth will demonstrate the evolution of square dancing from its traditional roots to its modern form. To top it off, members of First City Square will perform a “Teach Me a Dance” for audience members who want to learn the basics of square dancing, an interactive segment that allows attendees to get hands-on with this fun dance form.
The program is free and open to the public, and participants are welcome to bring a lunch to enjoy during the program.
