1969 – Betsy Rowles wins the LPGA Championship, beating Sue Berning and Carol Mann by four strokes.
1973 – The Miami Dolphins beat the College All-Stars, 14-3, in Chicago.
1986 – Greg LeMond becomes the first American to win the Tour de France. LeMond’s teammate Bernard Hinault of France comes second.
1986 – Pat Bradley sinks a 12-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole at the LPGA DuMaurier Tournament to defeat hard-charging Japanese veteran Ayako Okamoto. Bradley birdied five of the first six holes to finish with a 6-under 66 for a 72-hole total of 276.
1986 – Speed skater Bonnie Blair wins two titles and sets U.S. Olympic Festival records with 16 total medals and 10 gold medals.
1986 – Bobby Hillin Jr. became the youngest winner in NASCAR stock car racing history when he won the Talladega 500 at Alabama International Motor Speedway. The 22-year-old Hillin took the lead from Tim Richmond with eight laps to go in the 188-lap race.
1987 – The Salt Lake Trappers, an independent Pioneer League team, lost 7-5 to Billings, ending a record 29-game winning streak.
1992 – Patty Sheehan shoots 1-over 72 to win the U.S. Women’s Open 18-hole playoff by two strokes over Julie Inkster.
1993 – Reggie Lewis, the 27-year-old Boston Celtics star who collapsed from heart problems during a playoff game on April 29, died after doing some light training at the team’s practice facility at Brandeis University.
1996 – Canadian Donovan Bailey sets a world record in the 100 metres with a time of 9.84 seconds at the Summer Olympics. The Atlanta Games are subsequently tarnished by the Centennial Olympic Park bombing, which kills Alice Hawthorne and injures 111 people.
1999 – Tony Hawk becomes the first skater to land a 900.
2002 – John Ruiz defended the WBA heavyweight title he won from Evander Holyfield, this time getting up from the mat three times (all after low blows) and holding on until Kirk Johnson was disqualified.
2005 – Grant Hackett breaks one of swimming’s longest-held world records, beating Ian Thorpe’s record in the 800-meter freestyle. The 6-foot-6-inch Hackett won his second gold and third medal at the World Aquatics Championships in a time of 7 minutes 38.65 seconds, breaking the record set by his compatriot Thorpe four years earlier.
2006 – Just four days earlier, Floyd Landis’ stunning victory in the Tour de France was called into question after he was found to have high levels of testosterone during the race.
2008 – Carlos Sastre wins the Tour de France in the race’s closest race in its 105-year history, beating Australia’s Cadel Evans by 65 seconds as the Spaniard became the third consecutive winner of cycling’s premier event. Like the previous two years, this year’s Tour has been plagued by doping.
2013 – Candace Parker scores a record 23 points to lead the West to a 102-98 victory over the East and is named MVP of the WNBA All-Star Game.
2013 – Hunter Mahan withdrew from the RBC Canadian Open because his wife was giving birth. Mahan was the tournament leader at 13 under after 36 holes and had yet to tee off in the third round.
2014 – Italy’s Vincenzo Nibali wins the Tour de France, becoming the first Italian to win cycling’s premier race in 16 years. Nibali is the sixth rider to win all three major Grand Tours in France, Italy and Spain, and the first Italian to win the Tour de France since Marco Pantani in 1998.
2014 – Martina Hingis leads Washington to its fourth consecutive World Team Tennis title and fifth in six years, defeating Olga Govortsova 5-2 in singles in the Cattles’ 25-13 win over the Springfield Lasers.
2015 — The Arizona Cardinals hire Jen Welter as their inside linebackers coach through upcoming training camp and the preseason. According to the Cardinals, Welter will be the first woman to hold a coaching position in the NFL.
2019 – Israel participates in the European Baseball Championship for the first time.
