Who doesn’t love free food?!?!
We all think so!
And it’s perhaps understandable why some people would hesitate to give away food they received if a stranger claimed it as their own.
Hmm, what should I do…?
Look at how this woman handled her situation and consider whether she acted like an asshole.
“My boyfriend and I were sitting on a bench on our university campus when some bakery employees approached us and asked if we could give them their leftover food for free as they were closing.
If you’re in the UK and know about the ‘too good to go’ scheme then I think that’s part of it and the bag simply wasn’t received (more on that below).
nice!
Of course, getting a free meal in this economic climate felt like hitting the jackpot, the bag contained 3 pastries and 3/4 of a sandwich and we sat for another 5/10 minutes before heading back to our accommodation.
A few minutes later, a man saw us walking across campus with bags of food, followed us, and asked if we worked at the bakery (I assume so, since the bag had the bakery’s name clearly written on it), to which we replied that no, we were just students, and unfortunately the bakery had just closed 10 minutes ago.
He was aloof and implied that we had stolen one of the bags he had saved, to which I replied that I was sorry I couldn’t help but, again, we were just students and had nothing to do with the bakery, we just got it from an employee.
Oops…
I (foolishly) still didn’t realise at this point that we had likely actually taken one of the bags he had set aside because he’d left too late to retrieve it. He angrily walked away yelling back at us that he was intending to feed the homeless with the food and that we were bad people for not giving it to him.
Upon hearing this, my boyfriend asked me if we should run after him and give him the bag, to which I replied no (I was quite hurt at that moment by his aggressive nature towards us).
It’s been an hour already and I’m racked with guilt. I never want to take money away from charity and I really blame myself for it. In that moment I was just hurting.
Aida?
Here’s how people reacted on Reddit:
One reader said she was an NTA.
Another person shared their thoughts.
This guy accomplished that.
And someone else made a good point…
It seems pretty confusing!
