SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A piece is missing from the San Diego History Center’s current exhibit showcasing African-American history, “Celebrating San Diego: Black History and Heritage.”
“The Missing Pieces Project is really about working with the community and asking, what else is missing? What stories do we not know?” said Tina Zarpur, vice president of community engagement for the San Diego History Center.
So the Black Chamber of Commerce and the San Diego History Center are teaming up to listen as experts, with the help of the community, piece together lost pieces of San Diego’s African-American history. The information collected will eventually become part of a new digital exhibit that will be unveiled next February.
“We realized we don’t have all the stories, all the heroes, all the photos,” said Wendy McKinney, community connector consultant for the San Diego History Center.
McKinney, former chief development officer for the San Diego History Center, said he realized there was a lot missing from the African-American history archive.
“There are a lot of local residents who have information and they want to tell their stories,” McKinney said.
This panel will be the first opportunity to launch the digital exhibition project.
“We want to find a way to make sure that information isn’t lost, that stories aren’t lost, and that can be done through digitization and digital means,” Zarpour said.
