In the latest chart, released on Friday (June 21), Carpenter’s “Please Please Please” has risen from No. 3 to No. 1, while her previous leader’s “Espresso” (both via Island) remains at No. 2.
“Please Please Please” is the most streamed song in the UK this week with a total of 9.8 million streams, while “Espresso” has 8.1 million plays.
According to the Official Charts Company, at 25 years, 1 month and 10 days old, Carpenter is the youngest female solo artist to hold both the number one and number two spots. Ariana Grande held the same record in February 2019 when she took the top two spots with “7 Rings” and “Break Up with Your Girlfriend, I’m Bored” at the age of 25 years, 7 months and 20 days. Carpenter also tied for the top two spots on the Australian ARIA Charts.
Meanwhile, Luton, England, singer-songwriter Miles Smith set a career-best record with “Stargazing” (RCA) to take a 7-6 lead.
As Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour hits the UK, the American pop superstar’s music is predictably climbing the UK charts, with singles such as former leader “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone rising from #11 to #10, “Cruel Summer” rising from #17 to #14 and “I Can Do It With A Broken Heart” (all EMI) rising from #19 to #18.
The Tay-Tay effect has also extended to Benson Boon, who opened for Swift at Wembley Stadium, who has seen sales increase with the singles “Throw It Down” (Warner Records, from No. 18 to No. 15) and former No. 1 “Beautiful Things” (from No. 21 to No. 19).
Finally, as the UEFA European Football Championship begins, a timeless hit comes into play: Baddiel, Skinner & the Lightning Seeds’ 1996 theme song, “Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home)” (via Epic). The chantable tune is back in the Top 40, at number 32. “Three Lions” typically returns to the charts when England plays in a major international tournament. The single topped the charts twice for a week in 1996 to coincide with that year’s European Championship, before an updated version spent three weeks on the charts in 1998 to coincide with the 1998 World Cup. England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals saw “Three Lions” return to the number one spot in 2018.
