Ukrainian authorities said today that Russian missile attacks on the capital, Kiev, and other cities have killed at least 29 people and hit a children’s hospital.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Russian forces had fired more than 40 missiles at various Ukrainian cities, damaging infrastructure, commercial buildings and residential buildings. In a post on his social media account, Zelensky said that in addition to Kyiv, the cities of Dnipro, Kryvyi Rih, Slovyansk and Kramatorsk were targeted.
“All forces are working to save as many people as possible, and the whole world must show full determination to stop Russian aggression,” Zelensky said.
Kiev’s mayor, former boxer Vitali Klitschko, said the attack on the capital was one of the most violent since the Russian occupation began.
In a post on his social media account, Sergey Popko, head of the Kyiv city military administration, noted that Kiev’s air defense systems were functional and said that the Russian attack had resulted in missile shrapnel falling in different districts of the capital.
Popko said some buildings and vehicles were damaged in the Solomen, Golosiiv, Darnitsa and Svyatoshin districts where missile fragments fell, and a children’s hospital was damaged in the Shevchenko district.
Authorities in Kiev said seven people were killed and at least 25 wounded in the attack on the capital, while Krivi Rih Mayor Oleksandr Virkul said 10 people were killed and 31 wounded in Zelenskiy’s hometown of Krivi Rih. Meanwhile, the governor of Donetsk region said a missile had hit an industrial facility in the city of Pokrovsk in eastern Ukraine, killing three people.
Russia: Statements do not reflect the truth
Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry reported attacks with high-precision weapons on elements of Ukraine’s defense industry and air bases.
The ministry statement noted that Ukrainian officials had said the attacks were carried out against civilian infrastructure, saying “these statements do not reflect the truth,” adding:
“Many photos and images published in Kiev show that the destruction occurred as a result of the fall of Ukrainian defense system missiles. The Kiev regime always goes into hysteria before NATO summits. The purpose of such provocations is to fund the Kiev regime and the government. ‘Continue the war until there is only one Ukrainian left.’ To make it happen.”
