Motorists should avoid driving in bad weather, and if you must drive, here are some safety tips:
Do not drive through flooded roads. If you find a flooded road, turn back and find an alternative route to your destination. Use caution as visibility is limited, especially at night. Six inches of water can bottom out most passenger vehicles and cause them to lose control or stall. Two feet of water can sweep away most vehicles, including SUVs and pickup trucks. Do not attempt to cross a flooded road, even if the water appears shallow. Water may hide potholes, or even worse, floodwaters may wash off the surface of the road and damage it. If you have no other route, continue to higher ground and wait for the water to subside.
A line of fast moving thunderstorms is expected tonight that could bring damaging winds and tornadoes along with flash flooding. Here are some safety tips to help protect you from tonight’s weather:
Consider moving your vehicle away from large trees. Have multiple ways to receive warning information. If a warning is issued for your area, be prepared to retreat indoors and get to a safe location. Take appropriate action now to protect yourself and your belongings from floodwaters: Turn back. Don’t drown! Avoid flooded roads and paths.
