Rio Ferdinand has followed in the footsteps of former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney and undergone a hair transplant.
Ferdinand revealed everything in a promotional video for his clinic “Dr. Cinik” in Istanbul, Turkey. Mr Ferdinand, 45, has had plastic surgery on his hair and beard, and although the video was released on Sunday, it is unclear when he had the surgery.
“I came here to get my beard done. I’ve got some holes, some spots,” Ferdinand said in the video. “And get a hair transplant. I can’t wait to get it done. Listen, if you’re looking to get your own work done, this is the best place to be.”
In the carefully produced video, Ferdinand, now a pundit for TNT Sports, arrives at the clinic wearing sunglasses and posing in a United shirt, including a Liverpool kit, before greeting staff. He can be seen looking at a wall full of autographed football shirts. , Marseille, Brazil and Croatia. Afterwards, the process of bringing his hairline forward and filling in his beard was filmed.
Hair transplant costs at the clinic start from €2,350 (£2,027) and go up to €3,790 (£3,271). For soccer players, Dr. Chinik’s clinic is a familiar place. Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães underwent a hair transplant in 2022 at the same clinic run by Dr. Emra Cinik.
Brazilian legend Rivaldo, former Liverpool winger Ryan Babel, former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna, Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic and defender Nemanja Guderi also underwent hair transplant surgery, while former Barcelona winger, Ludovic Giuly also had a hair transplant and plastic surgery, while Juventus legend David Trezeguet and former Uruguay international Diego Lugano also visited for dental treatment.

Ferdinand’s former England and United teammate Rooney famously underwent hair transplants in 2011 and 2013. In 2011, he said, “I was about to go bald when I was 25, so there was no reason not to do it.” “I’m satisfied with the results.”
Ferdinand revealed in 2021 that he is dyeing his beard to avoid looking “like a Dalmatian”. On Gabby Logan’s podcast, he said:
“If it all went gray and my whole beard went gray, I’d leave it alone. But it’s like a patchwork. I like it, that distinct look, if… If it were all gray, I wouldn’t care. But this is a patchwork job, and I don’t like it.”
In a recent pitchside interview with United manager Erik ten Hag, Ferdinand’s TNT Sports colleague Laura Woods joked that Ferdinand is wearing a flat cap because he “doesn’t like his new hairstyle” . It is unclear when the hair transplant took place, but Ferdinand was in Istanbul with TNT Sports for the Champions League final in June.
