Buket Özgünlü, who cares for stray dogs with donations from animal lovers at the Patirikoy Dog Shelter he founded in Ankara’s Gölbash district and is also the president of the Paws for Life Association, brought a rabid dog from an animal shelter in Civerek to Ankara.
Announced on his social media accounts
“All the dogs in the shelter are sick. Not one of them is sick,” Buket Özgünlü said in a video published on his social media account, as he left for Ankara with 35 dogs and three banned breeds from the shelter in Şivelek. “The reason we didn’t neuter them was because of rabies. Three or four of them had rabies,” he said. “That’s why we couldn’t neuter them. They got sick, that’s why we left for Ankara. “They will go into the clinic, they will be disinfected and they will be treated,” he said.
An investigation has been launched
An investigation was launched following a complaint on social media, and the animals brought in from Sibelek were identified and quarantined.
Buket Özgünlü and association official MSD were detained.
The Ankara governor issued a written statement saying, “The allegations that dogs carrying this disease were brought into our city were accepted as a report and all forces, including our governor, law enforcement forces and the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture, were put to their disposal.” The animals that were located were placed in quarantine under the supervision of veterinarians, and “those who brought the animals into our city were arrested and detained in accordance with the instructions of the Chief of Prosecutor’s Office. Actions have been initiated against them.”
Arrested
Buket Özgünlü and association official MSD, who were detained within the scope of the investigation launched by the Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office, were sent to court after proceedings at the police station.
As a result of investigation by the prosecutor’s office, Ozgünlü and MSD were arrested on suspicion of “violating infectious disease control measures” and “violating the Animal Welfare Act,” and MSD was released.
