Food safety is a shared responsibility involving many stakeholders, all working together to ensure the safety of the food we consume. The EU boasts some of the strictest food and feed safety standards in the world, but unexpected incidents still occur, posing serious health risks to consumers. These situations call for a fast response, so preparation is essential.
This year’s World Food Safety Day, on 7 June, focuses on the importance of food accidents and preparedness for unexpected events. To mark the day, EFSA will launch new material explaining its role in responding to foodborne outbreaks as part of its joint Safe2Eat campaign with its Member States.
material:
EFSA podcasts on foodborne diseases. Foodborne diseases are illnesses caused by food or drink contaminated with toxins or harmful microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, etc.). Outbreaks and food safety incidents. Photo cartoons on EFSA’s response in case of foodborne disease outbreaks. A set of multimedia tools that EU countries can use on all social media platforms as part of the Safe2Eat campaign. These materials are accompanied by text and you can easily edit and update the text and translations.
Now one month into its launch, the Safe2Eat campaign has solidified efforts by EU and national food safety authorities to raise food safety awareness among EU consumers, providing useful guidance and information on the science behind safe food to eat.
This year, 18 EU Member States are working closely with EFSA on the campaign, supporting the organisation’s ongoing efforts to help EU citizens make informed decisions about the food they eat.
