Images have emerged showing police and security guards witnessing the “takbir” attacks on Starbucks and Burger King in Diyarbakir but failing to intervene. A statement was released by the Governor’s Office regarding the images.
A group from Diyarbakir attacked a Starbucks on Mahabad Boulevard in Kayapınar district and a Burger King outlet in Sur district on June 22. The attackers beat several people inside.
The Interior Ministry said 16 people had been detained in connection with attacks on Burger King and Starbucks stores in Diyarbakir, where they had been chanting slogans of “war, jihad and martyrdom” against Israel.
“The procedure for the 16 people who entered two separate business establishments in Diyarbakir Sur and Kayapınar districts on Saturday, June 22, 2024, is being carried out by the Diyarbakir Provincial Police Department. They will be sent to the Diyarbakir Chief Prosecutor’s Office today,” the Interior Ministry statement said.
Finally, new images have emerged from the “takbir” attack, obtained by the Mezopotamya news agency, which show that police and security personnel witnessed the incident but did not intervene.
Statement from the Governor of Diyarbakir
The Diyarbakir provincial governor issued a statement regarding the footage saying “security personnel did not intervene with the attackers.”
“These images were taken while the activists were being taken away by security personnel,” Diyarbakir’s governor said.
In his statement, the governor said some social media accounts about actions against workplaces in the city included posts saying “security personnel were on standby and allowed activists in.”
“However, these images were taken while the activists were being escorted away by security personnel,” the statement said.
The Interior Ministry said it had detained 16 suspects in connection with the attacks on two businesses in Diyarbakir.
HUDA PAR responded to the isolated attack by saying a Diyarbakir NGO was “concerned and these incidents are not isolated.”
