This historic venue was an important meeting place for LGBTQ+ Muffins in the 1960s and 70s, providing a sanctuary for self-expression amidst social challenges.
The plaque, installed at the N. Hotel Street entrance of Mauna Kea Marketplace, was blessed by Kumu Hinaleimoana Wong Kalu and symbolizes its importance at the former Glade site across from Kekaulike Mall and now owned by the City and County of Honolulu.
“This plaque is a testament to the extraordinary resilience and courage of people who faced discrimination simply for being true to themselves,” said Mayor Blangiardi. “Not only does it mark historical significance, it also highlights the struggles and triumphs of the LGBTQ+ community and serves as an educational tool for current and future generations.”
The installation was overseen by Mauna Kea Marketplace Chairman Ave Kwok and his team.
The site is the first stop on the Lei Pua Ala Queer Historical Trail, envisioned by Joe Wilson and Dean Hammer.
The trail aims to educate and engage the public about LGBTQ+ history through historical markers, digital experiences, performances and more.
“For the first time in Hawaii, the LGBTQ+ Mahu community has been officially recognized through a permanent facility,” Wilson and Hamer point out, “and the goal of the Lei Pua Ala Queer History Trail is to preserve and celebrate our stories and highlight our contributions and resilience.”
City Councilman Tyler Dos Santos Tam, who represents Chinatown, highlighted the neighborhood’s rich culture and the Glade’s role in fostering diversity and inclusion. “Chinatown has always been a place where different voices and identities can flourish,” he said. “The Glade has been an integral part of this tradition, welcoming artists, leaders, and individuals who dare to be different.”
Honolulu’s commitment to inclusivity has recently garnered recognition, earning the title of “Safest City for Women/LGBTQ+/BIPOC Travelers” from Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection.
