For pet owners, cats and dogs are part of the family, which means when you head out of town this summer, you can bring your four-legged friend along with you.
In fact, a survey conducted by Motel 6 revealed that of 2,000 Americans planning summer leisure trips, the majority (90%) of those traveling with pets this summer will be bringing their dogs, and more than a quarter (31%) will be bringing their cats.
Traveling with pets can be a challenge, but fresh from his wild adventure in “Garfield the Movie,” Motel 6 and its Chief Pet Officer, Garfield, offer tips to make the trip easier, safer and more enjoyable.
Pack the essentials: Travel anxiety is real for your pet, too, so make the trip as positive as possible by packing their favorite toys and treats. Don’t forget to pack food (like lasagna), water, collapsible food and water bowls, and a favorite blanket or bed to help them feel close.
Plan rest stops: One in six Americans (16%) planning to travel this summer will be taking their pets with them, so they’ll be driving to their destination. Travelers should plan rest stops for traffic jams and construction, especially for food. This will ensure they can find places for bathroom breaks and places for active pets to exercise, so even lazier pets can enjoy some fresh air.
Find pet-friendly lodging: When planning your trip, look for pet-friendly lodging with plenty of places to relax. Motel 6, for example, offers affordable accommodations for travelers and their pets, and pets always stay free, reducing the stress of researching hotel pet policies and paying extra fees. Pet owners traveling with pets can join the free My6 discount program to receive at least 6% off every stay at properties nationwide and access hundreds of pet and travel perks.
Travel Safely: If you plan on traveling with your pet, make sure they receive the best possible treatment by finding out how to transport them safely while traveling. The Humane Society of the United States recommends that cats and dogs travel in a cage or carrier secured with a seat belt to prevent them from moving around in the car. Never leave your pet unattended in the car or in the front seat, as this could lead to injury. No matter how well-trained your pet is, always keep them on a leash when outdoors, as they may be startled by new surroundings or unexpected sounds.
Don’t forget to have fun: The top reasons travelers bring their pets on trips include the joy of spending quality time with them and seeing them happy (39%), creating new memories with them (34%), seeing their pets’ reactions to new experiences (32%), and the special friendship that pets bring to the trip (29%). Ways to spend quality time with your pet include dining at pet-friendly restaurants (preferably ones with all-you-can-eat cheese), finding a nearby green space or park to hang out in, and exploring new experiences and going on walks together. For a more leisurely trip, be sure to schedule a quick nap with your pet.
