BROOKLYN, N.Y. (PIX11) — Rodney Valentine, originally from Trinidad and Tobago, was immersed in the rich tapestry of Caribbean carnival traditions on Thursday when he visited the “J’Ouvert Genesis Immersive Experience” exhibit at the Armory in Brooklyn’s Crown Heights neighborhood.
This was Valentine’s first time experiencing the exhibit. “It’s very insightful. It’s basically full of background information about the origins of carnival around the world,” Valentine said as he toured the exhibit.
The exhibit focuses on the story of how “jaubert,” the Caribbean’s iconic Carnival celebration, has developed, giving visitors like Valentine a comprehensive understanding of the tradition’s origins.
“I grew up watching carnival and mas and all that kind of stuff, so I think there’s an exhibit that will tell the stories of generations to come about some of the history of the actual carnival itself,” Valentine said.
The exhibition features an impressive collection of authentic artefacts and clothing from different eras, showcasing tangible links to J’Ouvert’s storied past.
Sandra Bell, the exhibition’s lead curator, stressed that while the Carnival celebrations we see today may be glamorous on the surface, there is a deeper context of hardship and loss of life that has shaped these traditions over the years.
“The Jauvert was chartered and made official in 1881 after riots and the burning of sugarcane fields,” Bell said, recalling the tumultuous path the festival took to gain official recognition.
“If you look at what you’re seeing now, no one would think it was born from resistance, perseverance and struggle. Many people have died. You would think it’s just people dancing in the streets, whining, making noise and having a good time. No, it’s coming from hell,” she added, digging into the key events that shaped Jauvert’s origins.
As Valentine continued to soak in the history and traditions on display, he couldn’t help but reflect on the importance of preserving these stories. “I think it’s important that stories are told and passed down,” Valentine emphasized.
The “J’Ouvert Genesis Immersive Experience” exhibit will run at the Brooklyn Armory until Saturday, June 15th.
