The NYT editorial board published an article titled “President Biden should withdraw from the election race for the sake of the country.”
The article noted that Biden had failed to convince Americans in the debates that he was up to the rigors of an administration that he plans to serve another term in, and said, “We cannot expect voters to ignore what is blatantly obvious: Biden is not the same person he was four years ago.”
The article described Biden as a “shadow” at the debate, struggling to explain what he would do if re-elected and dealing with the taunts and lies of his Republican rival, Donald Trump, who it said was making a reckless gamble.
Without naming names, the article emphasized that there are Democratic leaders better equipped to present a more compelling and energetic alternative to Trump, saying, “The greatest public service Biden could do at this point would be to announce that he will not continue to run for reelection.”
The article said that Trump had demonstrated in the debates that he poses a grave danger to democracy, that he is unworthy of the public’s trust, and that if re-elected, he had promised to become a president unconstrained by the balance of power in the American political system.
It also reiterated that the US should field a stronger challenger to the current Republican candidate, and said that if the November election remains between Trump and Biden, the editorial board would support the incumbent president.
Criticisms revealed during first live discussion
On the evening of June 27th, Democratic candidate Joe Biden and his Republican rival Donald Trump, who are competing in the US presidential election to be held on November 5th, engaged in a close battle in CNN’s first live debate.
While Trump was unable to establish a clear advantage over his opponent throughout the show, Biden, in his second bid for office, was subjected to heavy criticism after the show ended for failing to put in a performance that could allay concerns about his age.
As the debate over Biden’s withdrawal from the race intensifies, Republican Congressman Chip Roy announced that he is preparing a bill to ask Vice President Kamala Harris to impeach President Biden under the 25th Amendment to the Constitution.
