According to IPA data, Turkey ranks 18th out of 194 countries in the world with a population of 85 million, accounting for 1.1% of the world’s population. Recalling that the world population in 2023 was 8.45 billion, the IPA post noted: “China is next in the list with 1.425 billion people, followed by India with 1.425 billion people, the United States with 340 million people and Indonesia with 278 million people.”
According to data showing Turkey’s demographic changes, the population between the ages of 0 and 4 has decreased over the past decade, while the population aged 65 and over has increased by 48.1% to 8.7 million. Türkiye was one of the “very old countries” with an elderly population rate of 10.2%.
Istanbul population
In particular, in Istanbul, the population of people aged 0 to 4 is decreasing, while the population aged 65 and over continues to increase. In 2023, the number of births and the birth rate in Istanbul fell to their lowest levels.
Records showed that 156,708 babies were born in Istanbul, bringing the birth rate down to 1.20.
Bugra Gökçe, in his assessment from the X report, stressed that in 2002, a young population was a great advantage for Turkey, but today this window of opportunity is closing.
Gökçe said Turkey now falls into the category of “very old countries.”
