SOMERSET, Pa. (WTAJ) — The Somerset County Historical and Genealogical Society celebrated the grand opening of its new Pennsylvania Maple Museum.
The museum’s grand opening took place on Saturday afternoon. The museum is located down the alley behind the Somerset History Centre.
Visitors had the opportunity to view exhibits and see demonstrations of how the equipment is utilized. The exhibits included more than 100 pieces of maple sugar making equipment used throughout the state’s maple industry, many of which were donated by maple growers throughout the state.

Mark Ware, executive director of the Somerset County Historical and Genealogical Society, donated some artifacts to the museum himself and said it was only natural that the museum be located in Somerset.
“Somerset County has been a major producer of maple products since the late 1700s due to its climate, high elevation and large farming population,” Ware said. “Although Somerset County is the largest producer of maple products, maple production is now spread across the state, with six distinct maple sugar-growing regions throughout Pennsylvania.”

Ware said the museum wouldn’t have been possible without donations and support from maple growers across the state.
