The Bucharest Declaration, released at the Socialist International’s European Committee meeting in the Romanian capital Bucharest, included highlighting the Republican People’s Party’s success in local elections and Turkey’s EU process.
The addition of the relevant clauses to the declaration, initiated by CHP Chairman Özgür Özer and the CHP delegation, marks an important step in the left-wing social democratic party’s journey towards the EU.
The declaration, which was unanimously approved, included the following statement:
“We congratulate Turkey’s member party, the CHP, on its remarkable victory in the last local elections and support its fight for democracy and reforms that will lead to major progress in the process of full European Union membership.”
In his assessment of the inclusion of this clause in the Bucharest Declaration, Ezer said: “We have stated many times that we will defend Turkey’s rights in Europe. In this context, the unanimous approval of such a clause in the Bucharest Declaration of the Socialist International is very significant.”
New tasks for the CHP’s BÖKE
At the conference, Republican People’s Party Secretary-General Celin Sayek Boake was appointed to manage relations between the Socialist International and the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Socialist Group.
Following Ezer’s appointment as vice-president of Socialist International, Boake’s appointment to this position is significant in enhancing Turkey and the CHP’s effectiveness on the international platform.
