In a new episode of The Happy Hobbit, we move away from baking to explore fermented foods. All Hobbits love to grow vegetables, but those with vegetable patches face an age-old conundrum: how do you preserve what you can’t eat before it spoils? The problem may seem irrelevant to the people of the Shire, who are renowned for their food-preserving abilities, but even old Laria Took, also known as Laria the Great for her enormous size, couldn’t eat several pounds of cabbage in one go (and if she did, we’d pity her already-suffering relatives).
The sweltering heat of mid-winter forced Kili to face this problem, so she decided to ferment some Chinese cabbage to make sauerkraut… with mixed results! Watch the episode below to find out how she did it, what colour it turned out to be, and whether or not she’d recommend this method to other hobbits!
As mentioned above, many episodes of this web series feature baking and cooking. This past Independence Day, Kiri found out that her post, which included a “behind the scenes” image of cinnamon rolls being made, had been deleted by social media “techies.” She quickly grabbed her camera and shot a fun, satirical video about the conspiracy, which you can watch below.
