CASPER, Wyo. – A summer exhibit at Historic Bishop Home showcases Wyoming’s aviation history, from biplanes to jet travel.
“West Across the Skies” is part of the Wyoming State Museum’s traveling exhibits program and will be on display through Aug. 31, 2024, according to a release from Bishop Home.
The exhibit will be held in conjunction with an upcoming fundraising event at the Historic Bishop Home, featuring Elsa Wolf performing a first-person historical interpretation of Amelia Earhart. “An Evening with Amelia Earhart” will take place on August 10, 2024.
According to the release, until about 1920, aviation activity in Wyoming consisted primarily of “barnstormers” and other aerial thrill seekers. After World War I, flying technology and usage changed as airplanes were used in combat and then converted to deliver mail. Wyoming was a popular hub for airmail delivery due to its high elevation and visible railroad tracks that pilots used as “iron compasses.” Passenger aviation eventually came to Wyoming, and during World War II, Casper Army Air Field trained more than 16,000 combatants.
Parking for the Historic Bishop Home is located behind the house at 818 East Second Street. Hours of operation are Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Additional information about the exhibit and the Amelia Earhart Dinner can be found on the museum’s website, Facebook page or by calling Bishop Home Museum at 307-235-5277.
