MOUNT PLEASANT, Ohio – The Mount Pleasant Historical Society will be “Celebrating American History” with its annual tour of sites related to the 19th century abolitionist movement on Saturday, August 3 and Sunday, August 4. Featured on the history tour are 11 historic sites: Quaker Yearly Meeting House State Monument (c. 1814), Harrisbourne Log Cabin (c. 1804), Butler Cottage and Gardens (private home), c. 1830, Elizabeth House Mansion Museum (c. 1835), Tin Shop (c. 1840), Samuel Gill House (c. 1846), History Center (c. 1856), Mount Pleasant Friends Church (c. 1856), John H. Mercer/Bracken House (private home), c. 1850, c. 1884, and Irish Ridge Farm, c. 1800s.
This year’s tours will run from 10am-5pm on Saturday, August 3 and 1pm-5pm on Sunday, August 4. Please allow at least two and a half to three hours to complete the tour.
Mount Pleasant, located in Jefferson County, Ohio, is designated a National Historic Landmark District for its ancestors’ contributions and involvement in the Underground Railroad.
Tour tickets will be sold at three locations: 1) Elizabeth House Mansion Museum (438 Union St.), 2) Burris Fairlawn Store (311 Union Street), and 3) Irish Ridge Farm (621 Twp. Rd. 100). Tour maps will be available. Cost is $15 for adults and free for children 12 and under with each adult. All proceeds will benefit the Mount Pleasant Historical Society of Ohio, a volunteer non-profit organization founded in 1948. Tour updates can be found on Facebook at Friends of Historic Mt.
