Last season, the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Florida Panthers in style, dominating the Panthers 9-3 in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals to take home the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup. Mark Stone scored a hat trick in that game, capping off the 2017-18 team’s miraculous run to the Final Four.
It’s certainly not the biggest blowout win in the final round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. That honor goes to the 1991 Pittsburgh Penguins, who dominated the Minnesota North Stars in Game 6 to win their first Stanley Cup. But the nine goals they scored in that game is an NHL record.
That’s nine points, tying the Detroit Red Wings (1935-36) and Toronto Maple Leafs (1941-42) for the most points scored in a Stanley Cup Finals game. In fact, the Golden Knights are tied for 13th on this list after scoring seven points against the same Panthers on June 5, 2023. It’s fair to say Vegas had the offensive advantage in this series.
But what about the most goals scored in the final round? What about the player who scored the most goals in that series? The Stanley Cup Playoffs bring out the best in some players, and some even have their names engraved on the Conn Smythe Trophy. Here we take a look at various records throughout the history of the finals.
The most goals scored between two teams in Stanley Cup Finals history was recorded in 1972-73 between the Montreal Canadiens and Chicago Blackhawks. Both teams scored 56 goals in the series, with Montreal scoring 33 and Chicago scoring 23. The Canadiens won the series 4-2 and added another Stanley Cup to their extensive collection. Montreal’s 33 goals are also the most goals scored in the final round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
The individual record belongs to Canadiens legend Maurice Richard. “The Rocket” scored 34 goals in NHL championship rounds, four more than Jean Beliveau. The majority of Montreal’s Stanley Cup titles were won by these two Hall of Famers alone, and both stars made their mark on the hockey world.
For the Vegas Golden Knights, Mark Stone and Reilly Smith are the team leaders in scoring in Stanley Cup Finals history. Both players have scored five goals in the final round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Many of Stone’s five goals came in that memorable Game 5 last season, propelling him to the top of the list.
