In a thousand guesses, I would never have guessed that Russ Davis was one of the players tied with Haniger, but let’s put it aside. Haniger threw nine pitches and hit a game-winning single on Wednesday night to improve the Mariners to 40-30 this season. The Mariners have now won eight games in a row, their longest streak since 2001.
The hit was a welcome moment for Haniger, who has had some inconsistencies since returning to Seattle this year. Haniger, who was acquired from the San Francisco Giants this offseason, is batting .223 with six home runs and 30 RBIs. This is his sixth season with the Mariners, where he played from 2017-2022. The former Seattle All-Star has a career batting average of .254 with 124 home runs, including a career-high 39 in the 2021 season.
Haniger is no longer an everyday player, but he still gets significant playing time with Seattle. The team uses him as a right fielder and he’s in the rotation at the designated hitter position in addition to getting bench time. He did not start Wednesday’s game, but did pinch-hit in the bottom of the 10th inning to score the winning run.
The Mariners will face the White Sox again on Thursday at 6:40 pm PST.
