Miley Cyrus spent much of 2023 dominating the Billboard charts with her single “Flowers,” which ended up being a much bigger hit than most people expected when it was released. A year and a half later, the smash hit has almost completely disappeared from the American rankings … but by one tally, the song is not only still there, but still dominating the charts.
“Flowers” remains at No. 1 this week on the Adult Contemporary chart, which ranks the best-selling songs in the US based on the total number of impressions they received from listeners on radio stations that specialize in the pop subgenre, Adult Contemporary.
Cyrus’ single “Flowers” spent 52 weeks at No. 1 on the charts, making her the first song in history to stay at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart for an entire year.
It’s not uncommon for a song to stay on the Billboard charts for an entire year, but hitting No. 1 52 times is a different story, and it’s a very rare track to achieve that feat on any list. Cyrus’s performance has helped her make history, proving that “Flowers” is one of the biggest hits of the past few years.
“Flowers” has spent a total of 74 weeks on the Adult Contemporary chart, most of which at #1, but also some time in the top 10 just below Penthouse, and a few periods outside of that range.
Cyrus has far surpassed the previous record holder for the longest stay at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Prior to “Flowers,” Maroon 5 held the record, with their single “Girls Like You” spending 36 weeks at the top. “Flowers” long ago beat that record, and continues to widen the gap on one of the biggest wins by a pop band.
At this point, it’s unclear how long “Flowers” will continue to reign atop the Adult Contemporary chart. Even if it falls off the top spot next week, it’s likely to hold the record for a while. Once it starts to drop, Cyrus’ smash hit will move more slowly and may remain on the list for months or even another year.
