The Seattle Mariners defeated the Los Angeles Angels, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park. The win improved the Mariners to 34-27 and kept them in first place in the American League West.
The Halos are currently in last place with a record of 21 wins and 38 losses.
Starting pitcher Luis Castillo wasn’t in top condition Sunday, but he still found a way to pitch 7.0 scoreless innings for the Mariners, a performance that saw him set a personal record but also helped the entire starting rotation make team history over the weekend.
According to @MarinersPR on social media:
The @Mariners starting rotation (Brian Woo, Bryce Miller, Luis Castillo) has been held scoreless in each game of a three-game or longer series for the first time in franchise history.
This marks the fifth time a Seattle starting pitcher has held the opposing team scoreless for three or more consecutive innings (last time: Sept. 1-3, 2022).

Wu and Miller each pitched 6.0 scoreless innings on Friday and Saturday, while Castillo pitched seven innings. The Mariners have allowed five or more runs in each of the three games of this series, but overall, their pitching has been what has carried the team this year. These three, along with George Kirby and Logan Gilbert, make up arguably the best starting rotation in baseball. Given the Mariners’ poor offense, their pitching will have to continue to be elite.
The Mariners are off on Monday but return to Oakland on Tuesday night to face the Athletics, who are currently in fourth place in the division, with first pitch at 6:40pm PST.
