Los Angeles County government and nonprofit officials gathered at Alma Backyard Farm in Compton on the morning of Thursday, May 30, to celebrate the launch of a grant program that will distribute $10 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act to 40 local organizations with the goal of building a more resilient and just food system.
The effort is part of the Los Angeles County Food Equity Roundtable, a cross-sector coalition of county and local philanthropic organizations working together to advance food equity.
Thursday’s event also saw the launch of the Los Angeles County Office of Food Equity, where representatives from various organizations spoke about their plans to transform the neighborhood into a healthier community.
According to the County, nearly one in four Los Angeles residents are affected by food insecurity, and the grant funding provided will help community organizations identify and implement long-term solutions to achieve nutritional equity.
According to the Los Angeles County Food Equity Roundtable, communities of color and immigrant populations in Los Angeles County report much higher rates of food insecurity and greater difficulty accessing fresh, healthy food, especially during the pandemic. This grant and collaborative efforts from community organizations aim to build a fair and just local food system.
