Lineage recently launched the Food Chain Innovation Challenge, a global competition inviting students and startups to develop and pitch innovative solutions aimed at reducing food waste.
The Challenge will bring together top minds at three major events taking place in London on November 14, the Netherlands on November 19 and San Francisco on November 19. Participants will present their solutions to help different parts of the world, from mature to emerging and developing markets, mitigate post-harvest food spoilage in an affordable and scalable way, thereby improving food security, quality, safety and market access.
“According to the UN Environment Programme’s Food Waste Index Report 2024, the most recent data available for 2022, 1.05 billion tons of food is wasted – enough to feed billions of people,” Lineage president and CEO Greg Lehmkuhl said in a news release. “This reality is particularly grim considering that more than 783 million people worldwide suffer from undernourishment.”
“Reducing food waste can significantly enhance global food security and tackle hunger.”
The winners of each regional event will receive a cash prize. Additionally, an overall winner will be selected from the regional winners and announced in December. The Grand Prize Winner will receive access to a customized incubator program to further hone their business development skills and effectively scale their solution.
