LYNN — An exhibit focused on the city’s LGBTQ+ history will open at the Lynn Museum of Art/Lynn Arts on June 5 from 5:30 p.m.
The exhibit, “Looking back at Lynn’s LGBTQ+ history through the lens of a rainbow,” will feature exhibits ranging from about 20 gay bars in Lynn to members of the city’s LGBTQ+ community that have gained national fame, according to a press release. It covers everything over the centuries. Showcase.

The exhibit includes more than 20 video interviews with members of the city’s LGBTQ+ community, some dating back 40 years. The project will also feature more than 500 photos, flyers, posters and dozens of news articles highlighting the city’s LGBTQ+ history, according to the release.
This panel was donated to the National AIDS Memorial by the Congregation of St. Pius V on October 4, 1994. When other churches refused, St. Pio held services for the families and friends of AIDS victims.
Also on display will be quilt panels donated by the St. Pius V Catholic Community to the National AIDS Memorial Quilt.
Project director Jim Moser said team members were surprised by what they learned through interviews, including that the oldest LGBTQ+ bar in Massachusetts opened in Lynn Harbor in 1937, and that the first same-sex bar in the U.S. He said that included the meeting of the couple who were issued a marriage license. A public reception will be held June 5th at 5:30 p.m., followed by a panel discussion moderated by Cristela Guerra, WBUR’s senior arts and culture reporter, starting at 6 p.m. This panel will feature Humanities Advisor Dr. Drew Darien, Web Designer Christian Recinos, and LGBTQ+ History Advisor Dr. Pat Gozemba.
United Lynn Pride collaborated with Salem State University, Lynn Museum, and the History Project, Boston’s LGBTQ+ archive, to produce this project.
United Lynn Pride received a $20,000 grant from Mass Humanities’ Expanding Mass Stories Initiative for the project, according to a release.
The exhibition will be on display until October 31st.
