The A.K. Smiley Public Library in Redlands will host a presentation on movie theaters of the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley’s past on June 29 at 11 a.m. in the library’s assembly room.
Public historian and historic preservationist Kelly Shapiro, who grew up in the San Gabriel Valley and lives in the Inland Empire, will present “From Picture Palaces to Multiplexes: Theater Changes in Southern California’s Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley,” highlighting the evolution and transformation of movie theaters in the region during the 20th century.
Shapiro is the author of the recently published American Images book, “Movie Theaters of the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley,” which will be available for purchase at the program, according to a news release.
Her talk will show how entertainment options proliferated as people flocked to the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley in the 20th century, an area known for its citrus groves and vineyards, locations along Route 66 and mountain and desert resorts. Residents and vacationers could enjoy movies at establishments such as nickelodeons, movie theaters and drive-ins, some of whose historic establishments are still in business today.
According to a news release, Hollywood studios frequently held preview screenings of films such as “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz” at theaters in the Inland Empire and San Gabriel Valley, and these audiences influenced moviegoers in other parts of the country.
