Some 360 million European Union citizens went to the polls on Sunday morning to elect 720 members of the European Parliament in the world’s largest international election.
Voting will take place in 21 countries on the fourth and final day of the election, with Italy being the last country to close its ballot boxes at 11pm CET (“Central European Time” – midnight Turkish time).
Euronews brings you all the last moments and latest news on the elections. The first national forecasts based on exit polls are due to be published at 18:15 CET (19:15 Turkish time).
Opinion polls predict a historic surge for radical right parties. Such an outcome could shift the balance of power in the EU’s only institution governed by democratically elected representatives, giving the far-right greater influence over EU policy than ever before. However, these elections will also determine who will head European institutions in Brussels, such as the European Commission and the European Council.
For those who missed the agenda, here’s a quick summary.
Six EU countries have already voted – the Czech Republic, Ireland, Latvia, Malta, the Netherlands and Slovakia. Today, ballot boxes were opened for the first time in the EU21 countries, while voting is still ongoing in Italy and Estonia.
The election was overshadowed by an attack on Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen after a campaign event in the Danish capital, Copenhagen, last Friday night.
With 47% of Dutch voters casting ballots on Thursday, the far-right Geert Wilders’ Party for Freedom (Partij Voor de Vrijheid – PVV), known for his xenophobic and Islamophobic rants, increased its seats from one to seven, making him one of the night’s winners, according to exit polls.
But projections expected to be finalised this evening showed the pan-European Green Party, an international left-wing party, coming out on top with an astonishing eight seats.
