(NewsNation) — Pets across the ocean could soon be eating lab-grown food after Britain became the first European country to approve the sale of cultured meat for animal consumption.
The landmark approval is for Meatly, a British company that aims to create healthy, delicious food for pets without costing the planet.
The company says the product is made by feeding chicken egg cells vitamins, minerals and amino acids in containers “where temperature, acidity and other controls are controlled, similar to how yogurt or beer are made.”

Meatly plans to begin its first feeding trials with farmed chickens in August.
“We are incredibly proud that Meatly is the first company in Europe to receive approval to sell cultured meat,” CEO Owen Ensor said in a press release. “We are proving that there is a safe, low-capital way to bring cultured meat to market quickly.”
This marks a step in a greener direction for an industry whose annual greenhouse gas emissions are on par with those of small countries like the Philippines or Mozambique, according to a study published in ScienceDirect.
“Our pets consume large amounts of meat every day, so this development can play an important role in reducing the emissions, resource consumption and animal suffering caused by traditional meat production,” Meatly agronomist founder Jim Mellon said in a press release.

The United States approved the sale of cultured meat in June 2023, but some states have banned or restricted it to the extent possible.
