TOPEKA (KSNT) — KSNT 27 News celebrated its parent company’s birthday this Friday by collecting food for local nonprofits at two grocery stores.
To celebrate Nexstar’s 28th anniversary, 27 News partnered with Harvesters Community Food Network to collect food at two Dillons stores in Topeka and assemble meal kits to provide to families in need.
“The support from KSNT and Dillon’s has been amazing,” said Travis Barbon, who works at Harvesters, “and the impact is being felt throughout the Topeka area.”

The 27 News team accepted donations outside Dillon’s in North Topeka and at the intersection of Southwest 21st Street and Southwest Fairlawn Avenue.
We asked for donations of white canned chicken, bottled barbecue sauce, boxes of instant brown rice, cans of black beans, and canned corn and pears. For you, we will box these ingredients into meal kits that Harvesters will distribute to families in need.
“One of the things we want to do is provide a full course meal for families,” said Amy Pinger, community engagement manager for Harvesters, “so this is not only a recipe, but we’re also providing all of the ingredients to make a BBQ Chicken Burrito Bowl.”
Last year, KSNT 27 News partnered with Dillon’s and Harvesters for a citywide food drive, and this year they collected even more produce than last year.

In 2016, Nexstar founder, chairman and CEO Perry Suk created the company’s Founders Caring Day. Every year during the third week of June, each employee in Nexstar’s 116 markets volunteers at a nonprofit or public service organization in their local community.
