About five hours after Burlington City’s Malachi James broke the long-held state wind-legal record in the 100-meter dash at Wednesday’s 55th NJSIAA Meet of Champions, Southern’s Cole Kramer came close to breaking the record again!
While the attention of the New Jersey track and field world was focused on James’ state wind-allowed record time of 10.28 seconds set by the Pennsauken High School M of C, Kramer mounted a strong attempt at the new record by winning the 100 meters in 10.35 seconds (wind-allowed 1.0) at the Brooks PR Invitational at Renton Memorial Stadium in Renton, Washington.
Kramer’s time matched the previous state wind-legal record of 10.35 seconds set by Camden’s Jamar Irvin at the championship meet at South Brunswick High School in 2000. That time stood as the state record until James’ 10.28 second time Wednesday afternoon.
That’s amazing!!!
A 24 year old state record of 10.35 seconds was broken by one sprinter and tied by another on both coasts in the space of a few hours!!!
In addition to Kramer’s shocking win, two other Shore Conference players also had impressive performances at Brooks.
Rumson High School junior Clemmie Lilly ran a time of 2:07.87 to place seventh in the girls’ 800 meters, while Christian Brothers Academy junior Joe Barrett placed ninth in the boys’ 3,200 meters in 8:49.01.
Lilly entered the race as the state leader in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes 6.67 seconds, while Barrett ran 8 minutes 43.26 seconds at the Arcadia Invitational in April, the fastest 3,200 meter time in New Jersey history.
