Klay Thompson’s departure from the Golden State Warriors was going to be emotionally complicated and, on a historical level, logistically complicated as well.
The three-year, $50 million sign-and-trade deal that sent the five-time All-Star to the Dallas Mavericks marks the first six-team trade in NBA history, the Mavericks announced Saturday.
Also involved are Buddy Hield’s three-year, $21 million contract from the Philadelphia 76ers to the Warriors and Kyle Anderson’s three-year, $27 million contract with the Warriors. The Charlotte Hornets also receive Josh Green, Reggie Jackson and two second-round picks, while the Minnesota Timberwolves receive a second-round pick, a second-round pick swap and cash.
The 76ers would receive a second-round pick in exchange for Hield, and the Denver Nuggets would receive just cash. Got it?
The Dallas Mavericks announced today that they have acquired five-time All-Star Klay Thompson and a future second round pick in exchange for Josh Green and a future second round pick as part of a six-team sign-and-trade transaction.

This is the kind of thing you only see in the NBA, where contract and trade rules are incredibly complicated.
The combined Thompson and Hield contracts make this moment all the more impactful for the former champions, who are hoping the pairing of Stephen Curry and a young shooter can resurrect a dynasty on the brink of collapse.
Now, he can say he helped make history both during his time with the Warriors and afterward.
