Kentucky fencer makes history by winning second Olympic gold medal

A fencer from Kentucky has made U.S. Olympic history. Lea Kiefer, 30, of Lexington, is the second U.S. fencer to win two individual Olympic gold medals. She won the gold medal in foil at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics and defended her title Sunday night in Paris against fellow American fencer Lauren Scruggs. Kiefer defeated Scruggs 15-6 after a full day of competition. Kiefer’s history-making moment was more than just her own. It was the first time in Olympic history that two Americans faced off in the individual foil final. Kiefer, a four-time NCAA champion at the University of Notre Dame, was a medical student at the University of Kentucky when she won her first individual gold medal. Her husband, Gerek Meinhart, won a bronze medal in foil with the U.S. team at the 2016 Olympics.
